Rwanda confirms sending team to Kampala 2017

Rwanda Athletics Federation (RAF) will be sending four teams to battle in the 2017 IAAF World Cross Country Championships Kampala 2017. The event is due March 26 at Kololo Independence grounds in Kampala, Uganda.

Rwanda federation secretary Gen. Johnson Rukundo told the media recently that they will be participating in the biennial event, with a number of national races organised to select the best team that will represent the country.

“We will take all the four teams if the budget allows. The final list will be out a month prior to the competition. There will be various trial races for selection purposes,” Rukundo said.

Rwanda joins South Africa, Canada and Australia, who have already confirmed that they will be sending teams even before  the official preliminary accreditation for countries opened.

Accreditation will be done on line and over 700 athletes from over 70 countries are expected to grace the event.

During the last edition in the Chinese city of Guiyang, Rwanda was represented by four athletes in Pontien Ntawuyirushintege, Jean Marie Uwajeneza, Felicien Muhitira and Eric Sebahire. They competed in the senior men event where they led the team to a 11th place with Ethiopia winning the team gold.
