Ugandans Summons 32, camp on Monday

The Uganda Athletics Federation has summoned 32 athletes to start training for the IAAF World Cross Country Championships Kampala 2017 that are due March 26 at Kololo Independence Ground.

The team was selected from the top athletes that performed better at the Uganda Cross Country championships on Saturday at the same venue. The event was also a test event for the world event.

The head of technical for the Uganda Athletics Federation  Faustino Kiwa, who is also the competition director  said that  the top eight in every event were summoned to the preliminary team,  which will enter camp on  January 23 at the Kapchorwa High altitude centre.

The technical committee will select  the best six in each category  to represent the country in the different events.

Coach Benjamin Longiross will head the national cross country camp  coaching staff and will have Gordon Ahimbisibwe and Grace Chesang, also from UPDF,  Benjamin Njia of Uganda Police and Uganda Prison’s Francis Demayi to ensure that they prepare a  great team to take on the world.

Uganda focus is to ensure that they win at least a gold medal and the national anthem is sung at home in the biennial event, which is making a comeback to Africa since 2007 in Mombasa, Kenya.

The team:

Senior men : Joshua Cheptegei, Phillip Kipyeko, Abdallah Kibet Mande, Timothy Toroitich, Stephen Kiprotich, Stephen Kiisa, Fred Musobo and  Mande Bushendich

Senior women: Mercyline Chelangat,  Rachael Chebet, Dorcus Ajok, Doreen Chesang, Doreen Chemutai, Annet Chebet, Juliet Chekwel, Stella Chesang

U20 men:  Jacob Kiplimo, Titus Kwemoi, Victor Kiplangat, Elisha Chemutai, Kevin Kibet, Mathew Chepkrui, Anthony Ayeko and  Abel Chebet

U20 women: Peruth Chemutai, Janat Chemusto, Esther Chekwemoi, Sarah Chelangat, Scarlett Chemos, Adha Munguleya, Joy Cheptoek and Benna Sukuku
