KAMPALA - IAAF President Sebastian Coe is in Kampala to grace Sunday's 2017 IAAF World Cross Country Championship.

He addressed a press conference on the eve of D-day at Sheraton Hotel in Kampala and sat alongside, among others, Ugandan Olympic champion Stephen Kiprotich.

Coe, who jetted in Friday night, told both local and foreign journalists that his athletics will continue to come up with new innovations like introducing the relay event in the World Cross Country.

He hailed the Kampala event for attracting the largest number of participating nations (59) since 2006.

The IAAF boss urged European athletics federations to take more interest in cross country events and that IAAF is working to ensure that Russian athletes come back into the sport.

Uganda is hosting the world event for the first time and is the fourth African country after Morocco, South Africa and Kenya to do so.

Various teams have been flying in since the beginning of this week to take part in the one-day sporting event due at Kololo Independence Grounds.
