Cheptegei to lead Police Team

Joshua Cheptegei will be leading Uganda Police in their challenge to defend the Uganda National Cross Country Championships title. Cheptegei is among the names  that have been fronted by the Uganda Police  Athletics team as they seek to increase their dominance  at the  event set for Kololo Independence Grounds on January 14.

The event, which is expected to be one of the most competitive cross country event at home starts at 1.30pm and will help Uganda select the team that will represent them at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships Kampala 2017 event which is due March 26 at the same venue..

The national event will have a free entry for the spectators to give them a feel of what they will be expecting at the World event at the same venue.

According to Police coach Benjamin Njia, Cheptegei, who came back later last month after  taking part in several road races in Europe, winning some,  has been training hard, but also understands what is at stake  at the national event.

“We have told him and all other  athletes that  there is competition at the national event  and they have to be aware of that as  selection by athletes depends on speed and not  history. If they don’t perform to expectations, then they will fall out and have no one to blame,” said Njia.
